Hi bonnievillebob and thanks for your post. Sorry for the late reply my home page has been saying no new messages for the last few weeks and suddenly today it is showing heaps of new messages. I will be looking into this problem to assure it doesn't happen again.
In regards to your question I would first like to ask if your cat has access to outdoors at all and also if you think it is possible that it previously had outdoor access and has learnt to only toilet outdoors? For some cats indoor toileting can become unnacceptable when they are used to outdoors and they will then hold on inside until they can hold no longer and they will then end up going wherever they can find at the time.
Other things that can affect a cats use of the litter box include:
-The litter itself. Many cats develop a preference for a particular type of litter and will not use others. You can try basic kitty litter of different brands, crystals of different brands or even dirt or saw dust (these will need to be changed much more regularly).
-The area of the litter tray. Cats need to feel safe and private while toileting and will therefore prefer semi closed in areas where they can still see out such as in a corner. If you have other pets your cat is wary of it may be best to put trays up high.
-The litter tray itself. Your cat may prefer a certain type of tray such as metal, plastic, lidded or un-lidded. Try experimenting with a few. It is also best to have several toilet trays available at least until your cat is using them reliably and you have worked out which ones it likes and where.
It may also be possible that the cat has never been litter box trained. If you think this is possible use your cat training guide to start toilet training. Even if your cat has been toilet trained in the past a refresher course could definitely help it adjust.
I hope this tips help. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.
All the best,
