Creative Cat Toy Ideas

Postby KOPsarah on Tue Sep 08, 2009 11:10 am

Hi members, I have had a suggestion that a thread be started to share ideas for interesting cat toys and it seemed like a great idea! Having a variety of toys that keep your cat interested is both mentally and physically stimulating, keeping your cat exercised and entertained and while also helping to reduce problem behaviors. So post all of your ideas here and enjoy.

Note: It is best to supervise cats at all times with home made toys. If you notice any loose pieces or any other problems with the toy remove it immediately.

cardboard box mansion
Most cats love playing in empty boxes but they'll love it even more if you make them a whole box mansion. Join several different boxes of different shapes. Cut flaps for doors and windows. Put blankets in some boxes and toys in others such as suspending your cat's favorite mouse toy in a doorway. You can also get hold of some big thick cardboard tubes and put these in circular holes in the boxes to make tunnels. Cats love to both sleep and play in their box houses especially if you put them in a nice warm spot. The house can be a temporary treat or a little more permanent, rearranging the boxes regularly will keep your cat interested.

One of the ways that i keep Cleo entertained is by joining together with tape, kitchen roll tubes or toilet rolls that i have stacked on top of each other, so in a stack of 3 or 4 etc. I Then put her favourite dried treats or her normal dry food in the rolls. I have a few over the house and chage the locations so she has to search for the food. place them around the house in the morning before i go to work. I also use an egg carton which i leave the lid slightly open and she has to figure out how to open it to get the food out. You may have to be a little sneeky with some cats as they will just follow you around and eat the treats straight away!

Of course i take the treats or food that i give her on those days into account when i feed her for the rest of that day so you dont end up with an overweight kitty by always providing treats or extra food.

I also have a shoe box that i have cut holes in but i put toys in that box and she tries to get them out.
